Gambling operators without a valid UK licence could soon be prevented from sponsoring clubs in the Premier League and other British sporting competitions, the government confirmed on Monday.
Ministers have announced plans to open discussions in the coming months about introducing a prohibition. The proposal is aimed at “mitigate the risks associated with the illegal market and help eliminate unfair competition for properly regulated firms.”
Several Premier League sides currently display branding from operators that are not licensed in the UK. While this practice remains legal, the league has already voluntarily agreed to phase out all front-of-shirt gambling sponsorships starting next season.
Unlicensed betting companies can still secure deals for sleeve sponsorships, allowing them continued visibility within England’s top football division.
“When placing a bet on the big match, fans deserve to know the sites they´re using are properly regulated, with the right protections in place,” said Lisa Nandy, the UK’s Culture Secretary.
“It´s not right that unlicensed gambling operators can sponsor some of our biggest football clubs, raising their profile and potentially drawing fans towards sites that don´t meet our regulatory standards.”
